mac labs
Mac Labs was an artist residency Jaskirt Dhaliwal was selected for in April 2010 becoming one of the first artsist to use the newly refurbished mac (Midlands Art Centre) before its reopening in May 2010. As part of the residency Jaskirt wanted to explore what makes Birmingham the city it is especially after the artist residency in Morocco.
_____
Birmingham Is... is an open question about how you feel about the city and what you think it is. How is it characterised? Can it be defined? After much experimentation and exploration I think it's the people that make the city.
I decided to document portraits of all those involved with mac labs and ask them what they thought of Birmingham. However instead of using text with my images, I experimented by using audio clips instead.
Birmingham Is... has been created because of my love and passion for my home town. It aims to evoke emotions for those living in Birmingham (UK), good or bad, as well as representing some of the historical and iconic places within the city.
The video was primarily made as a way to explore parts of the city I was unfamiliar with. After working in Morocco on And'Art (views) I realised that I didn't know enough about the city I had grown up in and lived, so I used this as an excuse to go to places that are iconic to Birmingham. I even did the full number 11 bus journey.
The work first began as part of my artist residency at MAC during April 2010, and was exhibited at Warwick Arts Centre as part of my residency with Fierce on 24-27 June.
Inspired by the artist residency And'Art I collaborated with Birmingham based band Killer Yogi.
_____
I also extended her practice by working and collaborating with Dane Watkins to make a website with her photographs of Birmingham. To play the game and have your say on what image represents Birmingham go to: www.deepdrizzle.net/Birmingham
_____
Portraits from Mac Labs - I decided to take portraits of all those involved in the artist residency as a historical record because we were privileged enough to be some of the first people to work in the newly refurbished mac, a creative hub of Birmingham for decades to come.
